Unit 21 Film Editing report

Continuity editing
Continuity editing is when shots are edited together, or different components cut from a single shot, into a logical sequence so the viewer's attention is directed to a story across both time and physical location. It creates an illusion of continuous action, hence the viewer will not notice the transition between shots and their focus will be narrative-driven.

None continuity editing
None continuity is when shots are mismatched to disrupt the impression of time and space. This will get the audiences' attention directed to the process of cutting and disturbs the illusion of 'reality'. Montage, flashback, and jump cuts are examples of non continuity editing. The movie Rocky features a very famous none continuity editing which is a montage.

The Purpose of editing
Manipulation of time is key. Speeding up,slowing down, compressing and stretching time. This can be done with time lapses and montages.
Perception of space is another part. Logical and believable space between characters/objects not sharing the same shot, and it also helps the audience orientate themselves.
Then it also controls rhythm and pace so flow of production fits. High tempo action, slow tempo tension.
The Functions of editing
One of the main functions is to create a narrative. This is done by doing motivated editing to further the narrative. Motivated editing is where shots are carefully chosen to push narrative along and make audience believe what they are seeing.
There is also development of drama. Editing can affect drama by make it faster pace or slower pace. Fast pace can be done with quick cuts, which causes the scenes to look like the character is panicking. Then slow pace editing can be made to make it look like the characters distrust each other and don't want to look away. A perfect example of both these work in The Good, The Bad and The Ugly final scene, where it starts off slow pace and gets faster as they start to trust each other less.
Then also providing and withholding information. An example of editing being used to provide information is when it will cut to something the protagonist doesn't know about like a bomb, however the audience already does know it's there. An example of editing withholding information would be like if the character was dead after all like in the film 'Sixth Sense'.
