China removing homosexual scenes

'Bohemian Rhapsody opens in China, minus all the gay bits'

'Homosexuality has been legal in China for more than two decades and the Chinese Society of Psychiatry removed it from the country's classification of mental disorders in 2001. But the movie's censorship was widely anticipated.'

'Several minutes of footage were edited out of the film, including scenes of two men kissing and the word "gay".'

'Thousands of Chinese social media users have been sharing reviews of the film online.
Most have been positive, with more than 80% of social media users to post reviews on Weibo awarding the film five stars out of five. However, there has been notable criticism of the revisions.'

BBC promises to have more lgbtq characters

'BBC will have more gay characters in its shows to combat 'heteronormative culture''

'In a recent YouGov survey only 51% of 18 to 24-year-olds said they identified as completely heterosexual.'
An internal survey of 300 LGBT staff at the BBC revealed areas requiring improvement, including a heteronormative culture, a need for inclusive non-binary language, insufficient support for trans staff, and a need to "adopt LGBTQ or LGBTQ+".

Concerns were also raised that gay men were the most visible members of the LGBT community at the company, that intersectionality of race and background within the LGBT community was not reflected enough, and that there was a need for more visible LGBT leaders.

'They will be "incidental" portrayals, meaning that their sexuality is not part of a storyline or directly relevant to a news item.'

Karen Millington and Matt Weaver, said: "We hope this makes everyone feel included - whether genderqueer, bisexual, gay, lesbian, transgender, non-binary, pansexual, intersex, asexual, queer, questioning or an ally."

Overwatch features lgbt characters to 'educate' players

'Ed Nightingale, a gay gamer from London, hopes representing a "very macho, typically masculine character" as LGBT will help promote acceptance of LGBT people in other gamers.'

'"Gaming is a really powerful way of educating people," Ed Nightingale tells Radio 1 Newsbeat.'

'In late 2018, a group of gamers were given a permanent ban from Fallout 76after they were filmed "hunting" LGBT gamers and using homophobic language on voice chat while playing.'

'The sexuality of Overwatch characters is only explored in comic books and doesn't impact on gameplay, so Soldier: 76 being LGBT will likely pass by casual players who just want to grab a controller and shoot things.'

lgbt representation in Marvels Luke Cage

'Jackson Dillard was a gay man whose family rejected him, forcing him to hide his sexuality in both life and after his tragic death. Comanche and Shades are both trapped in lives of crime, and neither of them makes it out — one ends up dead, and the other ends up in prison. There’s no specific reason that the gay characters in LUKE CAGE had to be tied only to the villains’ side of the story… and yet, here we are.' The only lgbt characters in Luke Cage are dead/criminals

Record amount of lgbt characters in television
The annual Where We Are on TV report has found that 8.8% of regular characters expected to appear in the next year on US network television are LGBT, up from 6.4% the previous year, with 50% of them people of colour. There was also an equal percentage of male and female characters, an improvement on last year.
'Netflix was named as the streaming service with the highest number of LGBT characters, thanks to shows such as Orange is the New Black and Luke Cage. There was also special praise for Will & Grace, Supergirl, Empire and How to Get Away with Murder, which were all singled out for their inclusivity.'
