Working in the creative media industry Unit 2
Task 1
Film
Some products that will be made in the film industry are documentaries, movies, and tv series. All these products will also be different genres like action, horror, etc. There are a lot of roles in the industry like director, producer, camera operator, and many more roles can be seen here in the cast and crew for one of the all time biggest films.
Documentaries are factual films or sometimes television series. They are educational, and are supposed to teach the viewer about a topic. Most documentaries are narrated, and most do not have actors. Some might have actors if recreating footage. Some examples are Planet Earth, Supersonic, and The Day John Lennon Died. People have also made new kinds of documentaries called 'mockumentaries' and example would be The Office. A popular role for documentaries are narrators. A famous narrator would be David Attenborough. A narrator basically voices over footage and will explain what is happening on the screen.
Movies are often fictional films telling stories. They are made for entertainment purposes. They will contain actors and rarely have a narration. Some examples of movies are Pulp Fiction, Fight Club, and Avengers. A role in making movies is director. A famous director would be Quentin Tarantino. Directors are simply put the boss of making the film. It is their job to make the script into a product ready to be consumed by the viewers.
TV Series are also mostly fictional, but some can be non fiction. They are mostly for entertainment purposes, but some can be made for other reasons like education and more. They use actors just like movies. Examples of famous TV shows are Daredevil, The Simpsons, and Brooklyn 99. TV series have producers which is very important in TV series. It is the producers job for casting, budget, and administration work. A famous producer would be Peter Jackson who was producer as well as director for Lord Of The Rings. Since each episode will require a different budget, bigger or even smaller, producers role is very important.
People often get started in film as minor roles/extras. They are hired as they have experience acting but aren't yet skilled enough for a major role. They will eventually work their way upto a larger role.
Television
Television has roles like commissioner, floor runner, and equipment operators. Commissioner has the role of choosing which scripts will be produced, and aired on television. BBC, ITV, and other companies alike will have a commissioner. If a TV show/film doesn't do well it is often the commissioners fault for giving a green light on production. Cheryl Taylor is the commissioner for BBC children.
Floor runner has the role of making cups of coffee for cast and crew, cleaning up sets, and general helping behind the scenes. It's a fairly minor job but is how a lot of people start in media and get experience on set. Guy Ritchie started as show runner for adverts. He now is a director for the film Aladdin.
Equipment operators like cameraman have the role of capturing the footage. The production is affected if a cameraman is inexperienced as the camera might be shakey, out of focus, and not to high standard.
Television makes money from advertising, subscription, or TV license. ITV will make money from advertising, whereas SKY makes money from subscription and advertising, then the BBC makes money from TV license which everyone has to pay for in the UK.
Radio
Radio presenter is one of the most important roles in radio. They have to host the show, interact with the listeners, and play adverts/music. A famous radio presenter would be Chris Moyles.
A producer is the role in radio which will choose the music, adverts, news, and guests. They do the administration/legal work.
Radio makes its money from advertising. The BBC will make money from TV licenses and will run no adverts because of this.
Some people might get started in radio by working for community stations, such as spark.fm here in Sunderland. They will often talk about local news and then move onto further jobs in the industry.
Animation
Animator is the most important role in animation as without them there wouldn't be an animation. A famous animator is Kyeongho Choi who is the animation director for the show Castlevania on Netflix.
The role of the an animator is to draw and design characters, scenes, and CGI in a live action film sometimes. Animation can be used in film, television, and video games.
Well known animation companies are Disney, Pixar, and Dreamworks. These companies got famous through there ability to make animated films for children such Aladdin, Shrek, and Cars.
Animators often start in the animation industry by working for smaller productions and not very high pay.
Magazines
A writer for magazines is a needed role. This job requires you to be good at story telling, researching, and using correct grammar.
A lot magazines are now becoming digital as people no longer want to purchase copies in real life. It is much more convenient to be able to buy and read on your phone now that everyone has one
Some well known magazine companies would be Empire, Rolling Stone, and National Geographic.
Writers might get started in the industry by writing smaller less important arcticles, and then once they get better their editor will give them bigger stories to write about.
Press
Newspaper companies require journalists. Without them they wouldn't be able to get news. They have to be able to research, interview, and tell the story in an engaging way.
A few well known Newspapers would be The Sun, The Daily Mail, and The Guardian.
Journalists will often start on less important news, and then their editor will give them better oppotunities to investigate once they get better.
Computer games
A programmer will code the computer games. Without them wouldn't be video games. Need to be able to use programs such as Python, C++, and JavaScript. Jeff Kaplan is a well known developer who works for the company Blizzard. He worked on games such as World of Warcraft and Overwatch.
Some well known development teams are Obsidian, Square Enix, and Treyarch. There are also publishers who will do the marketing for the game. Some well known one's are EA, Bethesda, and Activision.
Programmers often start off programming their own games and then will get noticed by a development team and get picked up. Often development teams merge to make bigger teams to work on bigger games.
Task 2
A media industry I would like to work in is Television. Some examples of the major players in television is HBO, AMC, and ITV. Some famous recent television shows would be Game of Thrones, Daredevil, and Peaky Blinders.
How these companies make money from there products are advertising, merchandise, and tv license. Advertising makes money as in-between shows/half way through a show five minute break will play advertisements for companies who pay to show off their products. Some television shows will advertise products in the show itself, like car brands. Then TV license pays companies like BBC. Everyone in the UK has to pay for tv license. In return they get advertisement free television and non biased news.
Some ethical considerations are the effect on the audience. For example would it be ethical for a character to abuse drugs and make it seem all glamorous. When in reality it is addictive, harmful, and expensive. That's why there are the BBFC who decide the age limit for the audience to view films to prevent children from seeing abuse on film.
Some legal considerations are the making sure you don't slander, steal another artists product, and many other considerations. Slander is important as you don't want to make a person or brand seem negative as they might sue for damages. Stealing another artists product might lead to you getting sued due to the work might copyrighted.
A management role in television would be a producer. They are in charge of funding, budget and most admin work. They have a overall very important role in pre-production. They also have a say in the production. Producers also have a part to play in the casting for television which is a very important role to have.
Some creative roles in television would be directors, writers, and designers. Directors have to make the script that the writers created into a final product. Directors are the main creative role that are in-charge of making sure the final production is at its best. They do this by making sure each take is done correctly and each actor is giving their best. If an actor isn't doing well it's the directors role to make sure they try do better by telling them what they're doing wrong. A writer does the script, which the director will use to make the final product. Designers, like set designers and costume designers, will try to design things around genre.
Technical roles like camera and sound operators help create the final image too. They have to listen to the director, cinematographer, and other roles to make sure they capture the sound/image correctly. They need to know how to correctly operate cameras, camera dollies, boom microphones, and other capture devices.
Administration structure like runners and studio assistants have the job of making sure everyone in the studio has everything they need. A runner might be asked to go make a cup of coffee for the director. They might be asked to go locate a prop, script, or other things required to film.
Someone that would be in charge of marketing for the product would have the role of commissioning artists to make posters for the television show. Also they will be in charge of getting someone to edit the final product of the film into a trailer.
Scenes like this are the reason why I wish to work in the television industry. Would love to be apart of making a scene like this as I would be so proud. Scenes like these are very hard to do as they are taken in only a few takes. I would take a lot of practice and skill so I know I will have to practice hard.
People in television industry are often freelance. But some people might specifically made television for just one company. Sometimes they are even self employed making indie films.
There are many ways to get employment in the television. One is just knowing people in the industry. Friends will often employ other friends in the the industry as they can trust them to get the work done. Some people in television also have agents that have contacts in the industry helping people to find work.
The position in the television industry I would like to do specially is an editor. They are apart of the 'middle management' or 'developer' of the industry. Some editors like the lead editors are apart of the middle management. But some developers that have smaller editor roles are just apart of the developer category. They take the footage that has been taken and then they edit it all and make it into the final product. They are one of the main creative pieces on the production of a television series. The role of an editor is below the position of a producer or a director but still a higher position than a runner. An editor might start of doing smaller commissions and work their way up to a higher production. For example starting off with small local business doing the advertisements, and then hopefully working up to doing television shows for companies like the BBC or ITV.
Film
Some products that will be made in the film industry are documentaries, movies, and tv series. All these products will also be different genres like action, horror, etc. There are a lot of roles in the industry like director, producer, camera operator, and many more roles can be seen here in the cast and crew for one of the all time biggest films.
